Case study - Monash University Gippsland, Australia

Twenty four on-campus students and ten distance education students at Monash University Gippsland, Victoria Australia were each presented with four peptides to solve. The lecturer introduced the students to the concepts and conducted a training session where most students solved their first peptide.

An online survey was used to collect responses on the following:

Using the PepSeq Program

  • Was the layout easy to learn and use?
  • Did you find the program easy to use?
  • Is your Internet connection usually fast?
  • Were your experiments quick to run through your Internet connection?
  • Would you have preferred to use PepSeq through the Internet, or through an installed program?
  • Did you have any issues running PepSeq from any computer? If so, explain.
  • What did you find the most difficult?
  • What improvements could be made to the way you use PepSeq?

Teaching Value

  • Did the program help you to develop an understanding of techniques for peptide sequencing?
  • Did your experimental stategy improve as you progressed through the program?
  • Which was the easiest peptide to solve (1, 2 , 3 or 4)?
  • Which peptide  was the most difficult to solve?
  • Did you enjoy using the program?
  • Would you have preferred a wet lab?
  • Other comments

Answers to these questions will be collated in a paper to be submitted to selected biochemistry education magazines. Sample responses are given below:

"Yes. I found this "practical" experience very useful in relating the techniques when I was studying this section for the final exam."

"PEPSEQ was fun! It was like a mastermind game....was wondering if I could have a few more peptides to play with in fact.... :P"

"It would be fun if can provide an option of continue to practice an even longer chain of peptides."
